Othello, Konzerttheater Bern, Switzerland
2 May 2014
A dance piece loosely based on William Shakespeare's eponymous tragedy
Choreographer Estefania Miranda's work reflects a society incapable of integrating that which is alien. She refers to strategies of exclusion and to the closing European borders– themes that recently have become explosive in a frightening manner.
Dance, text, music, and video come together organically under Miranda's direction. Dutch composers Jeroen Strijbos and Rob van Rijswijk created music specifically for this production. It picks up on the musical aspects of the performance. Water surrounds the stage and acts as a barrier that isolates the dancers as if on an island.
